Importance of alpaca wool exports for Peru

Along with Australia and Bolivia, Peru is one of the largest exporters of alpaca wool in the world. More than 80% of the world's production of this elegant and sought-after product is concentrated in the land of the Incas.

It is not surprising that, given these large numbers, this translates into a great benefit for the pioneer country, which stands out in the market for its heritage of a thousand-year-old tradition of respect, care and animal welfare.

The alpaca represents an essential figure within their cultural identity and that is why it is also a key factor in their economy, as the numbers reflect.

In the first few months of 2024 alone, profits generated from this market reached USD 90 million, showing a growth of 33% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Likewise, in 2023 exports reached a total of USD 214 million.

According to data provided by the Manufacturing Management of the Exporters Association (Adex).

The Arequipa region is the nation's leading producer.

And there are very few areas of the planet that offer the necessary conditions for the care of this animal. In general, in Peru, they are places located above 3,800 meters above sea level, since the altitude of the Andean state is an essential factor.

In addition, there is his privileged climate and the quality of its pastures.

Among the qualities that we can observe in this product are its softness, resistance and hypoallergenicity. In addition, it has 22 natural colours and is proclaimed as a “sustainable wool”, since its breeding produces a lower environmental impact.

All these benefits are not unnoticed by the millions of textile shops and factories worldwide, with well-known brands spread across various countries.

Among them, China is the most important destination country, registering exports worth USD 29.4 million in the latest data. It is followed by the United States (USD 16.4 million) and Italy (USD 15.5 million). The three of them accounted for 69% of total exports of this type in the last period.

Germany and Switzerland are also in the list among the countries with the most demand.

In total, there are more than 69 markets and 383 exporting companies, according to the Sub-directorate of Intelligence and Commercial Prospecting of Peru.

And there are more than 120,000 families dedicated to this.

The fashion industry undoubtedly benefits greatly from this luxury item, as shown by the Perú Moda Deco 2023 festival, which was attended by more than 50 companies linked to this production and nearly 60 international buyers.

In addition, in 2024 it will also be promoted in Paris at the Premiere Vision fair at the beginning of July and in October we will be able to find it in Japan at the Fashion World Tokyo fair.

According to the organizers of these events, this helps to create greater business opportunities, as well as supporting their internationalization.
